St Albans Psalter

Parish church of St. Godehard, Hildesheim

folio 56 contains King David playing either a viol or rebec between his knees – three strings prominently displayed, which would suggest it to be more likely a rebec. The Holy Spirit is shown whispering inspiration into David’s ear via a dove.

Folio 417 again shows King David with a rebec (again 3 strings, played on the knees), this time surrounded by musicians. Two figures next to him play 7-string harps, above him there are two trumpet and cymbals players, and below two figures hammering small bells.
